Hey Jeff,

nice stuff here, my only comments are...

i would take out the portrait of Kat unless you're applying for a portraiture job.

the cheering arizona state fans are a little repetitive.

I know you love the first photo because it has a great story behind it, but if you're going to keep it in, I would stick it a little further down.

maybe it's just me, but I would only keep one of the ride along photos. I like the bleeding dude best.

on the portrait of Robles, I would completely drop out the background to get rid of the words.

love the keegan herring photo and might move it to the front. i know you're probably sick of it by now, but it is great. i might also end with the kid coloring in chalk, it's a nice moment.

take care and good luck with the borderlands project,

bettina

1. Too much negative space, not enough face. You could get a much tighter photo from the same scene if you shot from the other side with a telephoto and got some bike blur in front of the girl's face or her hand or her torso. As it is, the image isn't quite balanced, and it's got nothing to grab you.

2. The composition is a little awkward. Great concept, but the shadow on top of the star takes away from it. And it's not a definitive action on the other side of the flag - just two people holding hands for some reason. This shot would work great as part of a story.

3. Your football action isn't all that tight, and the moment isn't that unique, and if you are going to put in the Keegan Herring shot, I would include a sports action photo from another sport.

4. The sports fans and the helmets-together shot are kind of overdone. Try a photo of the helmets moment shot from below the players, or get something tighter from between two of them.

5. The light rail motion blur is kind of cute, because you can see what is behind it, but you need something in the foreground or nothing in the foreground - not some stuff along the left of the frame that isn't really identifiable.

6. Ditto what Bettina said about the portrait.

7. This is a really nice moment. I wish you hadn't cut off her arm but it is still good.

8. This one's fine. Maybe burn it in a bit so his head isn't so blown out.

9. Again, ditto what Bettina said, take out the words in the background. Also, I would look for another lit portrait - anyone can put a hard light at 85 degrees to the camera - editors are looking for someone who can combine lighting and composition and expression into one tight package. I may be wrong but I think every photojournalist should assist a good commercial photographer for a few shoots to get an idea of how to replicate complex Profoto lighting with speedlights. I need to assist more, it's easy to get stuck in one lighting style.

9. This one's excellent, and shows that you stuck around after the game and got in the middle of it. Nice composition. You might lose the highlights along the top of the frame.

10. This one doesn't have layers. It's a good moment with good color, but imagine the impact of you shot through another amusement-park-riding-couple to get this moment.

11. This one's excellent. You might shoot from a lower angle next time (to get his face), or emphasize the shadows more, but it is a solid portfolio shot.

12. Again, the fans are overdone, and the guy in the lower left corner isn't helping. I would expect a fan-portfolio shot to contain a really tight, unique expression, or some really intriguing layers, or maybe a fan who stayed late after the game and is sobbing. This frame, although the expression is good, is something you can get at any college football game.

13. I like the other ride-along photo better.

14. I wouldn't put this in, or I would put it in the middle of your portfolio. It's a nice weather shot, but you want your photos to show something about you, and this one communicates that you stayed outside for a while and got lucky with a lightning coincidence.

I hope I'm not being too critical with these. Let me know if you have any feedback feedback or any questions, and feel free to give me the same type of comments on my photos.
